In 2023 guidelines for performing cosmetic surgery were updated by the Medical Board of Australia. These guidelines were designed to identify patients who may be unsuitable for their intended procedure.
potential adverse outcomes for patients:
For a minority of cosmetic surgery patients, dissatisfaction with a procedure can result in adjustment difficulty, and personal distress, including social isolation, financial risk, increase in anger, and relationship strain. For certain mental health conditions, symptoms can worsen after a procedure.
key factors to address:
Important factors need to be addressed to support patients with cosmetic procedures. These include:
Managing expectations
Ensuring a clear understanding of procedural risks and recovery
Identification and management of mental health issues
Identifying undue influences on decision making
Managing changes to a patient’s identity
Identifying and managing poor self-image or other psychosocial issues
the assessment process:
The assessment of your suitability to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure will include the following:
Completion of an online intake form
Completion of several psychometric assessments
A clinical interview with a registered psychologist
A report to your referring doctor
A summary of your outcome/assessment to yourself
Please note: the psychological assessment process is undertaken for your wellbeing. The report to your referring practitioner may include a recommendation that you are not suitable for the procedure, along with recommendations for psychological preparation for your procedure. Total cost: $450, a Medicare rebate of $96.65 is available for eligible patients on a Mental Health Treatment Plan (as at June 2024)
