What is Psychology? The term "psychologist" is a protected title and cannot be used unless someone is registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency. Please note, the terms psychotherapist, registered psychotherapist, counsellor, registered counsellor, are not protected titles and can be used by anyone. If you are seeking therapy, please ensure you check the qualifications of your therapist to make sure they are appropriately trained, have professional supervision, and have a registered governing body. Why is psychology beneficial? Psychology isn’t for everyone. However, for some people, it is extremely helpful to gain clarity, reduce feeling 'stuck', or simply to have the strategic support of a therapist. For some, psychology is a great way to debrief situations and to know the person they are speaking with is completely confidential and non-judgmental. Psychology also brings lots of new skills to people's lives, helping them to bridge the gap between goals and the how-to/strategies of reaching those goals, whether they be related to happiness, relationships or other areas of life.
How long does it take? Psychology can be long or short term. Some people only have a few sessions, and others view psychology as a more long term process. Firstly, you will need to assess if your therapist is right for you. After that, you will have a discussion about your needs, and the esimated time frame it will likely take to takle anything you are working on. For many treatment protocols 8-10 sessions is a minimum.
How long is a psychology session? Your first session will be 1 hour and 20 minutes, to allow for adequate assessment and treatment planning. Further sessions run for 50-60 minutes.
What type of psychology do you do? We use a person-centred approach and use a variety of modalities to suit your particular set of circumstances and personality.
